SMETHPORT — An Eldred father and son have been charged with theft for allegedly entering private property and taking a spool of metal cable.
Timothy Vaughn Sr., 62, and Timothy Vaughn Jr., 41, both of 2710 Route 446, were each charged with one count of theft by unlawful taking, first-degree misdemeanors.
According to court records, on April 21, Kane-based state police were called to a report of theft from a piece of private property near Champlin Hill Road on Route 46. An eyewitness told police that she saw the two men attempting to load a spool of metal cable into a vehicle. She confronted the pair and took a picture of their vehicle as it was leaving the property.
The witness identified the pair from photos. Police went to their home, and the men admitted to being on the property and taking the spool. They said they didn’t know who owned the property and didn’t know the spool of cable “actually belonged to anyone,” court records stated.
The two were arraigned Tuesday before District Judge Bill Todd and released on $2,000 unsecured bail each. Both are scheduled to appear in Central Court June 28.
