Oswayo Valley’s Garren Black won the D9Sports.com District 9 MVP award for the second consecutive year.
Black had another stellar year for the Green Wave, leading the team on both sides of the diamond to the D-9 title game and to the second round of the state playoffs.
In addition to his MVP award, Black was also named the offensive player of the year. The senior drove in 26 runs and hit .563 with seven home runs.
The left-handed Black was also a force on the mound, putting up a 7-1 record and starting three straight postseason games for OV. Black recorded an ERA of 0.89 in 39 innings of work where he struck out 64 batters and walked only six.
Nate Beimel of St. Marys claimed pitcher of the year honors with a 5-0 record and just six runs given up in 44 ⅔ innings of work.
St. Marys’ head coach A.J. Meeker was named manager of the year. Beimel and Meeker lead the Dutch to a 15-8 record and the school’s first D-9 title since 2000.
Kylee Lingenfelter cleaned up the softball awards, winning both pitcher of the year and MVP. The senior led Punxsutawney to their fourth straight D-9 title as well as its first state title in school history.
Lingenfelter went 16-2 in the circle with an ERA of just 0.67 ERA. The senior, committed to play at Penn State next year, was almost as dangerous at the plate as she was on the mound. The leadoff hitter hit .463 with 11 doubles, two home runs, 19 RBI and 21 runs scored.
Lingenfelter’s head coach, Alan Pifer, won the coach of the year award for his role in leading the Lady Chucks to their best season in school history. Punxsy finished 19-3 and won the state title despite starting three freshman and three sophomores throughout the playoffs.
