The first day of summer is later this week, but the temperature on Monday indicated that summer is already here.
Highs reached near 90, with high humidity as well.
“High humidity in the air is likely to cause breathing difficulty for people with breathing issues,” Lt. Jeff Kloss of the Bradford City Fire Department said. He also offered a few tips to avoid heat-related health issues this season; “Limit your time in the sun and make sure to drink plenty of fluids, mainly water. And if you have access to areas with air conditioning, utilize them, whether it be home or a local store or shop. The most important tip I’d say is that limiting your exposure in the heat is key.”
According to our local weather experts in State College at the National Weather Service, this week may be somewhat moist but the days will remain warm and full of sunshine in between rain storms. And although the day time temperatures may seem as though summer has arrived to stay, be mindful that the evenings of the week will be dipping down into the 50 degree weather range.
Moving forward into the summer months, it is natural to be curious as to what mother nature has in store for our region this heat-filled season; according to the 2018 Farmers’ Almanac this summer will have warmer than normal temperatures for most of the nation.
The summer is predicted to be very warm and dry in our region with below-average precipitation, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.
While the daily weather is always changing and throwing curve balls, “the Farmers’ Almanac says that their long-range predictions have been accurate between 80 and 85 percent of the time.”
The Center for Disease Control provides a few tips for sun-safety this summer, such as using sunscreen and reapplying regularly, staying under cover or out of the direct sunlight as much as possible, dressing in cool, lightweight, light-colored clothing and making sure to pace outdoor activities.
Also, never leave a child, infant, baby or animal in a vehicle on a warm day — it will not matter if the window is cracked or not.
