SMETHPORT — In his report to the Smethport Area School Board Monday, Superintendent David London said both the elementary and secondary schools are construction zones and only authorized personnel should be on the property.
Certain activities, such as sports team using the gym and weight room, have been cleared from the administrative directive.
All others should contact the principals to determine if it is necessary to visit the schools.
School directors have approved cost reduction measures to be completed in both buildings, such as insulation, weather stripping, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and lighting modifications/replacements.
After hearing explanations from London about the details of competing maintenance agreements for HVAC from the McClure Company and Mazza Mechanical Services Inc., directors voted unanimously in favor of Mazza at a cost of $33,050.
Directors discussed the background of the greenhouse, which is on the high school grounds, and was once, but no longer, a project of local Girl Scouts. The board decided to honor the request from the Greener Growing Gardens, a project of McKean County Adult Probation Department, which will be responsible for dismantling and removing the structure.
In other action, the board also:
approved $5,225 to be used toward a matching funds grant through Smethport Borough for improvements to George Murray Field;
approved a contract with UPMC Cole for athletic training services for the 2018-19 school year at a yearly fee of $29,000, and
approved the administration to hold an advertised public sale of surplus items over the summer.
