SMETHPORT — A Port Allegany man pleaded guilty Thursday in McKean County Court for allegations that he accepted more than $20,000 in public assistance for which he did not qualify.
Jeffrey P. Evens, 44, entered the plea to one charge of violation of the public welfare code.
District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer explained that between March 17, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2016, Evens received a total of $20,743.80: $13,216.80 in cash benefits and $7,475 in food stamps. He received the money by failing to disclose his income during that time period.
Evens will be sentenced Aug. 2.
Also in court, James R. Dixon, 29, of Bradford, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance. On March 21, 2017, Dixon delivered about .42 grams of crack cocaine while under the surveillance of the McKean County Drug Task Force, said Shaffer. He will be sentenced June 14.
Precious A. McBride, 41, of Bradford, pleaded guilty to a charge of harassment. On Jan. 12, McBride threatened to kill a woman, according to Assistant District Attorney Ashley Shade. He will be sentenced June 14.
Joseph L. Frontino, 37, of Bradford, pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct and a summary charge. Shaffer said that on Dec. 3, Frontino, who was under the influence of alcohol, got into a scuffle with people in the Lighter Side bar; after he was removed from the bar, he returned to get his hat and was in another scuffle. He will be sentenced June 28.
Kenneth E. Zook, 42, of Kane, was accepted into the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition Program for receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit receiving stolen property; the case was prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office. Also accepted into the ARD Program were James F. Kocher, 64, of Cuba, N.Y., for DUI-controlled substance and alcohol; and Chad R. Kelley, 30, of Kane, and Craig A. Stroup, 51, of Kane, both for DUI-alcohol.
