SUMMERTIME: There is rain in the forecast for Saturday, but the folks at the Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center won’t let that stop them from enjoying a nostalgic summertime festival, set for noon to 6 p.m.
The Good Old Summertime Festival is meant to take visitors back to summers during a simpler time — the time of Bradford native Marilyn Horne’s youth. The mezzo-soprano was born in 1934 in Bradford.
“The show will go on,” museum manager Matthew Hileman assured us on Wednesday.
Visitors won’t have to stand in the rain to take part; they’ll be able to watch the thunderstorms from inside the grand museum, cafe and gift shop, which will be open all day.
There will be much to see, according to Matthew, who said, “The event will take place on two floors and will include the Monumental Brass Quintet, Todd Wagner vocals, fresh made hamburgers, hotdogs, house-made chips, old fashioned sodas, face painting, balloon animals and kids activities, specialty vendors and the Landmark Society Bake Sale, as well as cotton candy, pretzels and popcorn.”
The only activity that is canceled due to rain is the antique car display.
“Thank goodness for a six-story building with a grand ballroom!” Matthew said.
Attendees are invited to come to the old-fashioned summertime festival dressed in their favorite fashions from the 1920s-’50s.
PERSONALITY: Speaking of Bradford natives who have made a name for themselves, we heard that Chris Martin — born Christ Hermendes in 1928 in Bradford — passed away on Saturday.
He was a U.S. Army veteran; a former baseball player, playing for the Cardinals and in the Albany Twilight League; and was well-known in the Albany, N.Y., area for more than 60 years as a radio personality working for WABY and Empire Broadcasting.
A funeral service will be held Friday in Albany for the 89-year-old.
