SMETHPORT (EC) — Smethport Borough, along with the McKean County Planning Commission, has applied to the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission for more than $81,000 in funding for two projects in Hamlin Lake Park, said Councilman Ryan Yingling during Monday’s borough council meeting.
The funding request seeks $47,694 for drainage and resurfacing the infield at George Murray Field, the high school team’s facility, and $33,522 for a kayak launch at Hamlin Lake, which is to be handicap accessible and proposed to be built near the existing boat launch.
If the funding is received, the baseball field improvements would begin in the fall, while the kayak launch project is expected to start as soon as possible.
In what was the shortest meeting in recent years, council approved the borough’s application for $3,721 in County Aid. In a letter to the borough, the county commissioners stated they will be distributing $120,000 of their Liquid Fuel allocation to the county’s 22 municipalities based on road mileage and population for 2018, but as required by law, the municipalities must state how this money is to be used.
Smethport plans to encumber the 2018 County Aid for future street paving projects.
Bob Funk, the borough’s safety supervisor, thanked council for purchasing a new mower for the park.
