Just a few days ago at Bradford’s Memorial Day parade, sporting an American flag Hawaiian shirt, I was photographing as many sights as I could, trying to get the best shots possible for the paper.
Through it all, I was fortunate to witness a certain incident that gave me an elevating sensation of pride and confidence that the spirit of patriotism is not dying.
What I saw was a red truck, with several American flags on it, slowly cruising down Main Street during the parade. When it was passing Veterans Square, one of the flags on the truck dropped down to the pavement. Immediately, a young man in an orange shirt raced from the sidewalk to the road to lift the flag from the ground. After securing the flag, this young man raced back to the sidewalk where he held the flag. Unfortunately, I was obstructed when I tried to photograph the incident. Regardless, it was such an inspiring moment, one that showed me that the youth of America does have a sense of respect and pride for their country.
No amount of words may ever represent the importance of instilling patriotism into others and future generations. The passing on of the torch of an unconditional love for our nation is a key component to keeping the American spirit — the spirit that so many men and women have fought and given their lives for — alive and thriving.
To that young man, should he read this: Your quick action at the parade was very inspiring and admirable. You are a prime example of what it means to be patriotic. Your parents should be very proud of you. I hope that you continue to express your love for this country and that you inspire others with your patriotism as you grow older. If you come across this, please send me an email at eracalebh@gmail.com because I would be more than glad to talk with you.
Much too often we find ourselves so caught up in the rat race that we forget to stop for a moment and take a look at what a truly great nation we live in, regardless of political views. There is a reason that so many people immigrate to the United States. It is comforting to know that we, as one nation, can come together to honor those who have made sacrifices for this country.
In the words of many veterans I have heard speak, one of the best ways to honor veterans and their sacrifices is to live your best life because so many men and women have fought and died for us to be able to live our lives to the fullest. This advice is perhaps the epitome of honoring the brave men and women who have put their lives on the line in the name of freedom.
