Friday will be a sweet day for veterans in the Bradford area.
The Salvation Army Bradford Corps will host National Donut Day from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Lt. John C. Roche Post 212 Veterans of Foreign Wars on 94 Barbour St. Donuts and drinks will be on the menu.
National Donut Day dates back to 1938 when The Salvation Army in Chicago held a celebration.
“Though it’s been 80 years since the first National Donut Day we hope to honor those who still give selflessly to protect our country and those who still serve selflessly through The Salvation Army,” said Bradford Salvation Army Corps Commanding Officer Capt. David Means Jr. “We hope those men and women know that there are many who respect their sacrifices and will continue to honor those who continue to serve.”
The donuts will be made fresh by the Donuts Girls of the Bradford Salvation Army, using the recipe used by the Donut Girls during World War I, Means said.
Other donuts celebrations are being held around the United States.
Entenmann’s and The Salvation Army will host more than 40 Do Good Donut Parties, providing more than 8,500 veterans with donuts. There’s also an eating contest involving The Salvation Army of Los Angeles and BakeMark, and LaMar’s Donuts & Coffee is partnering with The Salvation Army for a scavenger hunt through Friday in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. The Disabled American Veterans and The Salvation Army in Honolulu will give donuts to veteran patients at Tripler Army Medical Center.
“Armed with their faith and little more than a helmet, rolling pins and donut supplies, the Donut Lassies provided the soldiers a piece of home in the trenches of eastern France,” said Lt. Col. Ward Matthews, national community relations and development secretary for The Salvation Army. “The donut was and continues to be a symbol of the comfort and support that The Salvation Army provides to more than 23 million people in need each year.”
The Salvation Army is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church and has a mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in Christ’s name without discrimination.
