It is that time of year again — when the air conditioners are turned up and swimming pools are the hotspots for cooling off.
In fact, the swimming pool at Callahan Park will open for the season on June 9. But for those within the city limits of Bradford who own a pool and a pool deck or are considering the construction of them, it’s important to know the City of Bradford Building/Zoning Department requires separate permits for both pools and pool decks.
According to the department’s Miscellaneous Construction Project requirements, pools must meet requirements. A pool may not occupy a required front yard or side yard. Any pool, hot tub, etc., more than 24 inches in depth must be enclosed by an approved type of fencing at least five feet in height. Entrance gates must be locked when no one is on the premises and special security measures such as hinged, lockable stairs, will be considered for meeting the requirements.
Decks should meet these standards: All decks at least one foot high require railings and must be constructed to building code. Awnings or canopies covering a deck are permitted but may not be within three feet of side property line. Handrails will be required whenever at least four steps are installed. Side property lines and rear property lines must follow the same guidelines as garages.
With temperatures rising, the American Red Cross would like to remind residents how to stay safe when hitting the pool or beach this summer. People can “beat the heat” in a fun way by remembering these simple rules:
Only swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards, always swim with a buddy, never swim alone, never leave a young child unattended near water or trust a child’s life to another child.
If owning a pool or hot tub, secure it with appropriate barriers. If boating, wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Use sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 15.
The Red Cross also suggests enrolling in its courses including water safety or swimming, and consider First Aid and CPR/AED as well.
The organization also reminds residents to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine.
