Lt. John C Roche VFW Post 212 and Frances Sherman VFW Auxiliary have announced their 2018 scholarship essay winners.
The scholarship was formed years ago in memory of Reba Y. Maben and William “Mr. Bill” Runyan. The committee organizes a golf tournament yearly to help fund this endeavor. The committee strive to raise money for two $1,000 scholarships yearly. This years golf tournament is slated for Aug. 18.
Shane Peterson and Sarah Nichols will be awarded the 2018 scholarships at 7 p.m. June 6 in the VFW club rooms at 94 Barbour St.
Shane Peterson is the son of John and Denise Peterson. He is a senior at Bradford Area High School and upon graduation will attend college at Penn State Behrend or Indiana State University majoring in computer science.
In high school, Peterson has played on the basketball, golf and tennis teams. He is a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Skills USA. His hobbies include golfing, snowboarding and video games.
Sarah Nichols is the daughter of Grant and Debra Nichols. A senior at Bradford High, her plans are to attend the University of Miami. She has been awarded the AP Scholar Award with Honor, Questbridge National College Match Finalist, Presidential Physical Fitness, High Academic Honor Roll, Wells Fargo Academic Leadership Fellowship finalist, American Legion Essay winner and Student of the Year (Geometry A Honors).
Her other activities include Key Club, BHS History Club, National Honor Society, First Night Bradford, BRMC volunteer, Eagle Scout volunteer, PA Governor’s School, PA Free Enterprise Week and Bradford YMCA swim competitions. Nichols enjoys swimming, gardening, cooking and biking.
