BEES: A third of the world’s food supply exists because of the support of pollinators such as bees, according to Connie Schmotzer, Penn State Extension Master Gardener coordinator and horticulture educator.
But the modern world is not being kind to bees.
“Without bees, the world’s food supply would be cut drastically, threatening the survival of many plants, animals and humans,” said Connie. “Life, as we know it, would be much different — and not for the better.”
Connie, along with many others, is concerned with declining bee populations — and she is working to reverse the trend. She and Pennsylvania’s Master Gardeners are promoting the Pollinator Preferences and Pollinator-Friendly Garden Certification programs.
“As to why pollinators are declining, most experts agree that the cause is complex,” stated a press release from Penn State. “Poor nutrition, loss of habitat, overuse of pesticides, parasites, disease and a changing climate all contribute.”
The Pollinator Preference Program “guides homeowners and gardeners on the best flower varieties to attract and support pollinators,” according to Connie.
Master Gardeners have been studying which plants attract pollinators, and they use the information to support the Pollinator-Friendly Garden Certification Program. That program teaches people how to create habitats for pollinators at home.
The program began in 2011, and since that time, more than 750 gardens in 57 counties have been certified, according to Penn State. It’s this enthusiasm in the program that has made it one of the most successful pollinator programs in the nation.

BUCKLE UP: With Memorial Day coming, a “Click It or Ticket” campaign is happening across Pennsylvania.
Through June 3, state police, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and municipalities are working together to enforce the commonwealth’s law regarding seat belts.
Under Pennsylvania law, everyone under 18 must buckle up, and everyone 18 and older who is in the driver’s seat or front passenger seat must buckle up.
