COUDERSPORT — A pair of New York state residents were arrested recently in Sharon Township, Potter County, on firearm-related allegations.
Coudersport-based state police reported that at 6:30 p.m. May 14, they were notified that Jason Mesler, 41, of Friendship, N.Y., was going to be in the Shinglehouse area hunting with his nephew.
Mesler, who is not allowed to possess firearms and who was not allowed to leave New York state because he is on parole, was found on Plank Road in Sharon Township, police stated. Mesler was spotted in a vehicle with his nephew, and when he spotted police vehicles, he allegedly exited his nephew’s truck and hid in the woods.
After a period of time — police did not say how long — Mesler left the woods and turned himself in, according to police.
Police also found that another person involved, William Carpenter, 25, of Olean, N.Y., was also not allowed to have firearms, and he was arrested on firearm-related allegations, too.
According to police, Mesler will face charges including persons not the possess firearms and flight to avoid apprehension, and Carpenter will face a charge of person not to possess firearms.
Both men have preliminary hearings scheduled for May 29.
