EMPORIUM — Again this year, the Cameron County Memorial Detail will lead a parade on May 28 in recognition of Memorial Day.
Organizers have put out notices to many organizations to be in this parade, and they welcome anyone who did not get a notice to come and join, too.
Participants will gather at Cameron County Vet’s and Shurfine’s parking lot at 9:15 a.m. As in the past, the Detail will lead off from there at 9:45 a.m. to 4th and Walnut streets. At 10 a.m., they will parade through town to the West End Bridge and Veterans Park.
Here will be an invocation by the Rev. Paul Siebert.
The speaker this year will be Technical Sergeant Mary J. Greif, U.S. Air Force. She served a total of 22 years in the military. She was born and raised in California but now makes Emporium her home. She was stationed stateside in Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, New York and Pennsylvania, and stationed overseas in Germany and Italy. She has been awarded four Accommodation Medals, four Achievement Medals, two Good Conduct Medals, as well as many other awards.
All members of past and present military services are invited to join, no matter if they served in the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard or during peacetime or war, including the Auxiliary members of the American Legion and the Veteran of Foreign Wars.
The Cameron County Band will play songs including “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations and their Auxiliaries will place wreaths in memory of the veterans and auxiliary. There will be a remembrance by U.S. Navy Detail member brothers Rob Aversa and Joseph Fragale for those sailors and marines who died at sea. The Memorial Detail will perform a rifle salute and “Taps,” and the flag will be raised to full height.
A brunch will be served at the Vet’s Club for all participants.
