A Shinglehouse man is facing numerous charges after police allegedly found VHS tapes containing images of child pornography at his home.
Stephen E. Perkins, 69, of 122 N. Union St., was arraigned Friday before District Judge Kari McCleaft on 30 counts of child pornography, all third-degree felonies; and tampering with physical evidence, a second-degree misdemeanor.
According to the criminal complaint, someone reported to the Shinglehouse Borough Police that a visitor saw a paused picture of what appeared to be a naked 12-year-old boy on Perkins’ computer. At another time, the visitor found two pairs of size 2T-3T underwear.
Another man allegedly told police that Perkins asked him on Dec. 16 to dispose of numerous VHS tapes; some allegedly had covers depicting boys that appeared to be between 12 and 13 years old. The man put the tapes in 17 garbage bags and put them in the garage, court records stated.
The man reported to police that, years ago, he and another male took child pornography tapes from Perkins’ home and disposed of them at a dump in Westons Mills, N.Y., according to the criminal complaint.
Police obtained a search warrant for 122 N. Union St. and the garage behind it, and at 12:10 a.m. Dec. 17, Shinglehouse police and state police searched the residence.
Police said they found a black pillowcase in a nightstand that contained youth underwear and 16 garbage bags of VHS tapes — 30 of the VHS tapes were found to have child pornography on them, according to court records.
Police reported that Perkins was cooperative during the investigation and provided a written statement to them regarding the allegations.
Perkins is free on $15,000 unsecured bail, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for today.
