A Bradford man accused of assaulting a woman at a local campsite over the weekend is in McKean County Jail.
Steven F. Woodel, 50, was arraigned Saturday night before District Judge Richard Luther on charges of strangulation, a second-degree felony; simple assault, a second-degree misdemeanor; and harassment, a summary charge.
According to court records, at 6:03 p.m. Saturday, Kane-based state police were dispatched to assist a law enforcement officer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture with a domestic dispute that allegedly happened at Willow Bay Campground, 4001 W. Washington St., Corydon Township.
Law enforcement officials were not immediately able to find Woodel, as he had run into the woods, but they talked to the alleged victim, who had bruising on the right side of her neck and her right knee, court records stated.
A witness told police that the woman tried to get into the driver’s side of a vehicle, and Woodel came up behind her, wrapped his arms around her neck and took the keys from her, according to the criminal complaint. She allegedly tried to punch him, then he allegedly punched her in the head and neck area, tackled her to the ground and struck her multiple times in the head and neck area before fleeing into the woods.
Woodel was jailed on $30,000 bail, and he is scheduled to appear in Central Court on Thursday.
