Jonah McKeirnan, a first grader at the Smethport Area Elementary School, proudly shows the Eastern Hemlock seedling that he received during the “My Growing Tree” program that officials of the McKean County Conservation District presented Wednesday. Justin Lund, the county’s recycling director, at right, assisted Jody Groshek, the conservation district’s communications and outreach director, and presented the students with their seedlings. The students also received certificates that can be used to record their height and the height of the tree. “My Growing Tree,” which is presented annually during Arbor Day, educates the students about the importance of trees, how they help the environment and the responsibilities of the care and use of trees.
