The Bradford High boys track team finished third at Saturday’s Harbor Creek Invitational.
Senior John Eakin won the shot put with a throw of 55 feet and placed third in the Discus with a toss of 139-4.
“The weather was pretty bad and definitely had an effect on all the events today,” Owls coach Tom Tessena said.
Junior Jaron Ambrose placed first in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 15.50. He was second in the 300 hurdles in 42.5. He also tied for second place in the high jump with five others at 5-7.
“He also had a lead for us in the 4×100 relay but that relay was disqualified,” Tessena said. “That should have capped off a great four-event day for Jaron but he still scored 22.66 points out of our 84.66 team points.”
Two other seniors did well for the Owls in their last Invitational for Bradford.
Logan Caruso picked up a pair of third place finishes in the 1600 and 320 meter races. Caruso ran 4:40.51 in the 1600 and 10:21.84 in the 3200 for his best times of this season.
“This was only the fourth time he has ran this year. With just three weeks left until Districts we are hoping Logan can be in good form by then.”
Ryan Whittemore placed second in the javelin with a throw of 154-10, which was a career best.
“He was a little off in the shot put (38-1 for sixth place) and the discus (103-7 for 16th place) but he overcame that in his last throw in the javelin today. It is very hard to get warmed up for any event on a day like this and all the events are affected.”
Junior Matthew Stafford placed third in both the 110 hurdles (15.81) and the 300 hurdles (43.60).
“Matthew is not yet back to his earlier form this year but he is getting healthier. He will need to be in top form if we are to have any chance at Districts.
“We didn’t have much to write home about today but we did have several others who did place.”
Steve Kellam placed sixth in the pole vault (11-6).
“As you can probably imagine this was by far the hardest event to do anything in the cold, wind, and heavy rain.”
Dylan Phillips placed sixth in the 110 hurdle (17.68). Derek Sunafrank got sixth in the 400 (56.47). Donny Pattison was eighth in the 100 (11.91) and Steven Knowlton took eighth in the long jump (17-4).
“Our 4×800 relay ran poorly but at least they didn’t get disqualified and actually ran,” Tessena said. “We had to make last minute replacements in the first relay and couldn’t even field a team in the 4×400 relay due to another injury earlier in the meet. We are so thin in relay personnel we may have trouble fielding relay team teams at Districts. With injuries and others quitting the team we are scrambling to put something together.”
Others who competed for Bradford were: Derek Sunafrank (javelin 112-10), Spencer Whittemore (javelin, 112-2.5), Josh Mackey (discus, 90-3), David Allen (800, 2:18.42), Tyler Kraft (800, 2:23.26), Gabe Mitchell (3200, 11:23.66), Ryan Cottillion (3200, 11:36.61), Cade Hayden (1600, 5:24.84), Devin Benson (1600, 5:36.89), Jake Pattison (100, 12.54), Kyle Stewart (100, 12.82 and 200, 26.10), Gavin McGee (triple jump, 32-3.5).
The Owls will travel to Elk Catholic on Tuesday.
