SMETHPORT — The state legislature and the McKean County commissioners have declared April 15 to 21 as “Conservation District Week.”
The dates coincide with Earth Day events and celebrations.
There are 66 conservation district offices across the Commonwealth in every county except Philadelphia. These offices have volunteer directors and staff who focus on local natural resource protection.
Staff work to ensure there is enough clean water and promote healthy soil for the future.
“We are excited to celebrate Conservation District Week,” said Kerry Fetter, McKean County Conservation District board president. “We must support our conservation districts so they can protect our local areas, streams, and natural resources.”
During Conservation District Week, offices across the state will be celebrating with a variety of activities including Earth Day and Arbor Day programs, seedling sales, sponsoring local Envirothons, and much more.
The McKean County Conservation District is kicking off spring environmental education programs with the first My Growing Tree school presentation in Port Allegany this Friday to celebrate. All of these events will show the projects districts work on every day that promote good stewardship of natural resources.
Working together, citizens can ensure there is enough funding for conservation districts. Encourage conservation by thanking legislators for providing state funds supporting conservation district programs and projects.
