GETTING WARMER: With the weather hopefully staying a bit warmer, people will likely be on the road more. And more than likely, people will be making the trip up to Olean, N.Y., and that means navigating roundabouts.
A roundabout is a circular intersection without traffic signals, which is engineered to maximize safety and minimize congestion. Traffic travels counterclockwise with ramps for incoming traffic to yield. In Olean, there are several traffic circles.
New York State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Paul A. Karas recently offered guidance for traveling through roundabouts as they become more common on roads in the Finger Lakes region. Tips for safely navigating a roundabout include slowing as you approach the circle, looking left and entering traffic when there is a safe gap. Remember to use your turn signal as you exit the traffic circle.
Roundabouts are safer, more sustainable and more efficient than traditional intersections. Crashes in roundabouts are less severe, resulting in fewer injuries and fatalities, the state says. They help traffic move more smoothly, reducing congestion and improving air quality.
A GETAWAY: Weekend getaways can provide great bonding opportunities for families. During the week, families may be too preoccupied with hectic schedules packed with sports practices, extracurricular activities and work commitments to get much quality time together.
Here is some advice: Don’t stray too far from home, find fun activities, don’t overbook the weekend, avoid Friday rush hour, and pack light.
Weekend getaways can provide busy families with an ideal time to step away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some time together.
