An inmate in McKean County Jail was arraigned again Friday for allegedly plotting with his wife to sabotage a criminal case against him.
Christopher Salonis, 42, of 299 E. Main St., is charged with solicitation of tampering with evidence and conspiracy to tamper with evidence. His wife, Irene Salonis, 46, is charged with tampering with evidence and conspiring to tamper with evidence.
According to court records, on Jan. 8, Sgt. Butch Bartlett with Bradford City Police was involved in a DUI-fleeing and eluding incident involving Christopher Salonis, who was operating a pickup truck owned by Irene Salonis. A preliminary hearing was held before District Judge Rich Luther where charges were bound over to court.
Bartlett received information that Salonis was going to have his wife change the ignition and door locks on the truck from the prior incident so the evidence police had would not match at the time of trial, the records alleged.
Bartlett spoke to Irene Salonis, obtained a search warrant to check the keys and checked communications at McKean County Jail. From the recordings, he was able to determine Christopher Salonis did advise his wife to change the ignition and door locks on the vehicle, and that Irene Salonis did.
Bartlett spoke to Irene Salonis again, told her about the evidence, and she admitted to her involvement, as well as her husband’s, court records allege.
Because the criminal activity was initiated during a conversation at the jail, Bartlett turned over the investigation to McKean County detective Linda Close, who filed the charges, the records stated.
Christopher Salonis was arraigned Friday by District Judge Bill Todd and returned to jail in lieu of $5,000 bail in this case. He is still incarcerated from the prior case as well. He is scheduled to appear in Central Court on Thursday.
Irene Salonis has been charged, but not yet arraigned.
