Three wildfires kept area fire departments busy Friday evening.
Norwich Township, Smethport, Port Allegany, Austin and Emporium firefighters were called at 6:35 p.m. for a wildfire off of Gardeau Road that was endangering a camp. Reports from the scene indicated the fire was in a small generator shed and almost extinguished as of 6:37 p.m.
Another wildfire was called in at 6:41 p.m., this one with exposures and reportedly located in the area of 1909 Rock Run Road in Annin Township. Port Allegany, Coudersport and Roulette responded.
Updated reports indicated there was a structure fire, and Austin was dispatched. Coudersport was recalled at 6:45 p.m., and Roulette was directed to stand by at Port Allegany.
Completing the trifecta, Coudersport was called out to a wildfire at 8:14 p.m. in the woods near 169 Whitney Creek Road. Roulette was put on standby for Coudersport.
Spring is one of the most dangerous times for wildfires in the area. Residents are reminded to avoid leaving fires unattended, as there can be high winds and a lot of potential fuel for these fires in the form of dried grass, weeds and leaves.
Fire officials say the most common cause of wildfires and resulting damage is careless debris burning.
