GONE FISHIN’: Trout and salmon season officially kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday in Pennsylvania.
To mark the occasion, Bendigo State Park officials invite anglers to stop by between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. that day for an opening day event.
If you don’t own a fishing pole — or even if you don’t know how to fish — the event is a great opportunity to determine if the sport is for you. The park has a Fishing Tackle Loaner Program, and there will be people available on opening day to share fishing tips.
Just bring your 2018 Pennsylvania fishing license and meet near the Bendigo State Park pool.
If you’re looking to exercise your bragging rights for a good catch this season, the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau is hosting a Big Fish Contest.
Go to to visitpago.com/big-fish-contest/ to submit your fish.
You’ll need to upload a photograph of the fish and place where you caught it — you must catch it in Cameron, Clarion, Elk, Forest or Jefferson counties. There’s a spot on the submission form where you can say just how big your fish is, as well as share the tale of how you reeled in your prize catch.
Gift certificates will be awarded to several participants, and the grand prize winner will receive a guided half-day smallmouth bass fly-fishing trip for two.
Trout must be at least seven inches long to keep. The regular season lasts to midnight on Labor Day.
TAXES: Does everyone have their taxes done?
The deadline to submit your 2017 taxes is Tuesday.
JEFFERSON: Thomas Jefferson would be 275 years old if he were alive today.
The Associated Press reports, “On April 13, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. on the 200th anniversary of the third American president’s birth.”
