EMPORIUM — Cameron County got a pair of strong pitching performances to defeat Smethport 2-0 on Thursday and move above .500 on the season.
Adam Shaffer struck out seven while walking nine in the start. Marcus Brown then finished things off with a brilliant relief outing in which he struck out nine and walked none in four innings of work.
“Adam struggled through some control issues but he kept us in the game,” Cam County coach James Cooney said. “Then Marcus came in and put it on cruise control and we were able to get the ‘W’.”
Brown helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly that scored Alex Umble in the fourth innings. Umble would later score again in the sixth on a Smethport error.
Matt Stratton struck out four and walked two in five innings for Smethport.
Cameron County (2-1) will play again today when the Red Raiders host Brockway.

COUDERSPORT — Coudersport continued it’s red-hot start to the season with an offensive explosion against the Gators.
The Falcons (3-0) have now scored 35 runs over their three wins this season. Coudy was led offensively against Port Allegany (0-2) by Owen Chambers, who went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Kullen Crosby added three RBI for Coudersport, which did all of its scoring in the game’s first three innings.
“Today’s game was much different from Tuesday (an 11-5 victory against Oswayo Valley),” Coudersport head coach Doug McClintic said. “We had to take a real aggressive approach in that game and we had to earn a lot and nothing was given. Today, we had discipline at the plate and were able to work walks. That led to some timely hitting for us.”
The Falcons were also aided by a strong start on the mound from Josh Steven. The junior allowed just four hits and struck out six over four innings of work.
Coudersport hosts Otto-Eldred at 1:00 on Saturday.
