DUBOIS — The Bradford High baseball team probably wasn’t counting on having to wait until mid-April to play its first game. The Owls were finally able to go outside on Wednesday, falling to DuBois 5-2 in their season opener.
A four-run second inning by the Beavers sparked by several Bradford miscues proved to be the difference.
“It was kind of a comedy of errors in the second (inning),” Owls coach Andy Carlson said. “We looked like we’d been practicing on hardwood for a month and half.”
Glenn Starr led DuBois with a 2-for-3 performance including a double, while Joe Frano added a double of his own. Starter Peter Foradora earned the victory after striking out five and walking three in four-plus innings of work.
Bradford’s runs came from an RBI single by Isaac Gralak and an RBI groundout by Adam Boyer. Hunter Gray notched a double, while Tyler Gigliotti and Caleb Nuzzo had Bradford’s other base hits.
Peyton Manion, Drew Piganelli, and Boyer combined for four strikeouts, five walks, and seven hits on the mound.
Despite the loss, Carlson knows his team is still shaking off the early season rust after so many postponements.
“You look at the box and we beat them 2-0 from the third inning on,” he said. “We can definitely play with them. We know that.”
The Owls will host Johnsonburg at Pitt-Bradford at 4:45 p.m. on Friday.

Elk Catholic 6, Kane 3
ST. MARYS — Elk County Catholic head coach Ken Vogt notched his first career win, and the Crusaders survived a late rally from Kane (0-1) to win their first game of the season.
ECC (1-3) lost its first three games of 2018, but Vogt’s team put together a strong performance on both sides of the ball Wednesday.
Alec Wehler picked up the win for the Crusaders, surrendering no hits and striking out four over three quality innings of relief work. Will Uberti powered ECC’s offense, driving in four runs on two hits.
The Crusaders were poised to make easy work of the Wolves, until the Kane bats came alive in the final frame.
Robert Rumcik, Ethan Alexander and Jake Alcorn all drove in runs in that inning before Taylor Boland closed out the game for ECC.
Both teams play next on the road Friday.
