SMETHPORT — Collections of old medications in drop boxes throughout the county are continuing to be a success.
On Monday, District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer said the total collection for this quarter was 132.4 pounds, as compared to 111.2 pounds in December.
“Each quarter, a detective with the District Attorney’s Office collects the medication in each box, weighs it and arranges for its destruction,” Shaffer said.
In Kane, 28.4 pounds was collected this quarter, an increase of 17.8 pounds from the last quarter. At the McKean County Sheriff’s department, 30.8 pounds was collected, an increase of 6.8 pounds from the December collection.
At the Bradford City Police department, 62.6 pounds was collected, an increase of 7.4 pounds from the last quarter.
The only location which saw a decrease was Bradford Township Police Department, which collected 10.6 pounds, a decrease of 10.8 pounds from the last quarter, Shaffer reported.
“The goal is to keep the medication out of the hands of anyone other than the person to whom it was prescribed and also out of the water supply by people discarding the medication by flushing it,” she said. “The drop boxes have been very successful and we will continue to report to the community the amount of medication discarded each quarter.”
The medication drop boxes are located at the McKean County Sheriff’s Department inside the McKean County Jail; Kane Borough Police Department; Bradford City Police Department and Bradford Township Police Department.
