SMETHPORT — One of two women accused of conspiring to start a fire in a Kane house has pleaded guilty, while the other has asked for a jury trial.
Holly L. Gausman, 43, of Grampian, and Karen L. Hatten, 62, of Brockway, both appeared for last day to plea conferences Thursday in McKean County Court.
Hatten entered a guilty to plea to one charge of conspiracy to commit arson, while Gausman pleaded not guilty and asked the case be listed for trial.
According to District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer, Hatten pleaded guilty to allegations that on Nov. 7, 2014, she conspired with her daughter, Holly Gausman, to commit arson at a Tionesta Avenue, Kane, home belonging to Gausman.
Gausman collected $347,280.03 in insurance money from Erie Insurance after the fire, Shaffer said.
Hatten will be sentenced at 1 p.m. April 19.
Shaffer outlined the plea that was offered to Gausman that Gausman rejected.
The agreement called for Gausman to plead guilty to charges of arson, conspiracy to commit arson, false/fraudulent/incomplete insurance claim and theft by deception. The plea recommended a sentence of nine months to two years of incarceration.
No trial date was set, but Shaffer asked for two days for trial. A pretrial conference is set for May 24.
Both women are free, Gausman on $350,000 unsecured bail and Hatten on $25,000 unsecured bail.
