VETS: Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, as Lewis Run resident Clayton Vecellio reminds us.
He writes, “The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act was signed into law by President Trump in 2017 after being passed unanimously by both the Senate and House of Representatives. It recognizes March 29 as the date in 1973 when the last combat troops were ordered out of Vietnam.
“The act says March 29 is a day ‘the flag should be displayed,’” Clayton noted.
HAM: It’s great to have an old favorite on a holiday, but why not try a new way to cook your Easter ham this year?
Straub Brewery in St. Marys shared this ham recipe with a twist:
Crock Pot Ham Recipe
Ingredients:
5-6 pounds ham
1 ¼ cups crushed pineapple
1 ½ cups brown sugar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 (12 oz.) bottle or can of Straub Amber
Directions:
Pour Straub Amber into the bottom of the crockpot
Place ham in crockpot. In small bowl, mix the remaining ingredients and pour over the ham.
Cook on high four hours, or low eight hours. Remove and slice.
Create a glaze by mixing a starch with leftover liquids.
Straub recommends pairing the ham with scalloped potatoes, deviled eggs and family.
GIRLS BASEBALL: With Major League Baseball kicking off today, we thought we’d take another look at baseball 75 years ago.
With so many young men entering the U.S. Armed Forces, baseball teams were struggling to find members.
In stepped Philip Wrigley — of Wrigley chewing gum fame — who was also the owner of the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball franchise.
To save the baseball industry, a committee formed by Wrigley came up with this idea: bring women on to play. And with that, the All-American Girls Softball League was born.
The first game of the league was held May 30, 1943.
These were the ballplayers that inspired the 1992 film “A League of Their Own.”
