Those attending the soccer game at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on May 19 might see some familiar faces, as 13 Bradford soccer players — seven girls and six boys — were selected to play in the prestigious Corporate Cup.
The Corporate Cup is an exhibition soccer game comprised of teams from New York and Pennsylvania selected from several school districts from each state.
The seven girls selected from Bradford are freshmen Chloe Shaw and Mackenzie Lucas; sophomore Regan Johnson; junior Mikayla Bond; and seniors Morgan Shade, Madison Sera and Sarah Niegowski.
The six Bradford boys are sophomores Ayron Hart and Ian Grady; junior Jason French; and seniors Jacob Johnson, Jared Lucas and Brent Kennedy. Not only did 13 Bradford athletes make the team, but Bradford High’s head coach Wes Lohrman has also been selected as head coach for the Pennsylvania team.
“It’s an honor for one to be selected to this team,” Lohrman said. “It’s like an all-star game between New York and Pennsylvania. From my perspective of coaching these guys, they are privileged and honored to be able to play in this game.”
According to co-founder Kris Linderman, the goal of the game is to provide an opportunity for local high school soccer players to showcase their skills to college scouts in attendance of the game.
“Our goal is to have at least a thousand (people) in attendance,” said Linderman.
Linderman also said that important factors to being picked for the big game include having a good work ethic, a balance of skills and the ability to play as hard as one can.
For those who want to attend the Corporate Cup, the game will be held at Pitt-Bradford’s Kessel Athletic Complex. The boys will square off at 1 p.m. with the girls to follow at 4 p.m.
