SMETHPORT (EC) — The Smethport Fire Department has announced that it is ending the sponsorship of the “Wheel Around the Hub,” the Great PA Wilds Cycling Races, that became a popular fall event in Smethport.
In 2009, the Smethport Fire Police took over the races from the Smethport Lions Club. After one year, the fire police turned over the responsibilities to the Smethport Fire Department. The Great Smethport Bicycle Races, which dated back to the1890s, saw riders following a 53-mile scenic course along U.S. Route 6 through the borough and surrounding areas in pursuit of the gold watches that were awarded to the winners.
During the revival of the event, a 15-mile Fun Race was added to the competition.
Later, the Smethport Fire Department assumed responsibility for organizing the races. Much planning went on behind the scenes.
“The department members agreed to end our sponsorship of the races because of the increasing difficulty in securing sponsors,” said a department official, “This extra time will allow us to concentrate on other fundraisers.”
With proceeds from the races, the SFD was able to purchase radios and safety equipment.
