EMPORIUM — Students at the Woodland Elementary School will receive a visit from U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., later this month, which will include a question-and-answer session with fifth and sixth graders.
Cameron County School District Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe discussed the visit with school board members during the regular board meeting held Thursday night.
The visit will include a tour of the elementary STEM lab and demonstrations by students. Thompson will be accompanied by Deborah Pontzer, who specializes in workforce development.
Board members unanimously approved adoption of a resolution for the proposed 2018-19 general operating budget of the Seneca Highlands Intermediate Unit (IU) 9 in the amount of $1,310,125, with the district contribution set at $41,130.
Staffing changes were approved following the resignation of long-time district employee Veronica Lukaschunis, who most recently served as secretary to the superintendent and resigned effective May 10. Lukaschunis’s position will be filled by Wendy Goulding, who had served as assistant to the administration. Goulding’s former position will be filled by Kelly Palumbo, who had served as elementary school secretary/clerk. Palumbo’s former position will be advertised as soon as possible.
Wolfe discussed difficulties that arise when employees are off work or resign but stated that most of the administrative staff and secretaries have cross-trained on the other positions so they can step in during an emergency. The IU can also provide staff while employees receive training.
The salary for secretary to the superintendent is set at $31,836 per year; the administrative assistant salary is $26,990.
Board members voted to discipline one unnamed student according to the provisions set forth during an in Lieu of Expulsion hearing held on March 8.
The next regular meeting of the Cameron County School District board of directors will be held at 7 p.m. on April 12. A workshop meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 5. Meetings are open to the public and held in the high school library.
