SMETHPORT — Smethport Borough Council agreed Monday to schedule the annual clean-up week during May 7 to 11.
During last year’s clean-up week when just 81 customers participated, the borough faced a loss of more than $800, and this along with an increase in tipping fees at the landfill in Hutchins, prompted council’s approval of a five-dollar fee to register this year, bringing that amount to $40.
Speaking about this new fee, council President Greg Rounsville said, “We’re not trying to make money from clean-up week, but we should at least break even.”
The borough will seek bids from haulers and award the contract next month.
In other news, council, after hearing a request from Bart Barton, coordinator of the McKean County Historical Society’s Art on the Island slated June 22-24 in Hamlin Lake Park, agreed to use the society’s application for food vendors’ licenses and insurance, which is similar to the borough’s.
“We hope to have an increased number of entries for the car show for this event,” Barton told council.
Several residents who attended the meeting had requests for the borough. One person asked when several marked trees on her property will be removed.
According to a borough employee, these trees are to be removed before spring.
Responding to another resident’s question about the paving of Forest Avenue, a councilman said this project is on the current list for repaving this year.
During the council members’ reports on the agenda, Ryan Yingling said the borough is seeking grants for projects in the parks.
Council met in an executive session for 23 minutes to discuss personnel matters.
