The Historical Architectural Review Board approved updates to the exterior of a downtown restaurant during its meeting on Monday.
HARB secretary Chelsea Schwab said that McDonald’s is seeking a look that is more “sleek” and “modern” than what the company has done in the past, saying they are getting away from the bright colors that the restaurants have donned in recent memory.
Schwab said the restaurant’s plans are still in the early planning stages.
While HARB approved as presented the standard application that McDonald’s submitted, approval is not yet final.
“Next Tuesday, it will have to be approved by city council,” Schwab explained.
She said the restaurant’s plan includes removing the PlayPlace and making design updates including a readjusted roofline, a flat facade and and updated logo with its name in a newer script.
“HARB thinks it’s going to be a great update to the building and look more classy,” she said.
Schwab noted that property owners in the historic district only need to get approval for exterior changes, not interior changes. She believes the restaurant’s owner is planning interior changes, too.
She said updates could begin this summer but added that the owner has multiple businesses and does not have a specific timeline for this project.
The McDonald’s application was the only one HARB reviewed at Monday’s meeting.
