ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Some updates on St. Bonaventure women’s basketball and its ties, both present and future:
It’s not my role or right to give current Bonnies coach Jesse Fleming advice … however, this once I will.
Actually, he probably doesn’t need it, but just in case, Jesse, burn the tape from last night’s game.
It drew a crowd of nearly 800 to the Reilly Center, Wednesday evening, in part because it was Bona’s “Pink Game,” to raise awareness of breast cancer. Unfortunately, it devolved into a 79-57 loss to Richmond, a decidedly pedestrian Atlantic 10 team, and doesn’t merit revisiting.
The 22-point home defeat tied for the Bonnies’ worst since last season’s 57-35 loss to Bucknell at the RC.
With the win, Richmond improved to a modest 11-15 (6-7 Atlantic 10), tied for eighth in the conference, while the Bonnies slipped to 7-19, 2-11, 13th in the 14-team Atlantic 10.
If the season ended today, Bona would play at fourth-seed George Mason (8-4, 19-7) in the opening round of on-campus A-10 post-season games.
Trouble is, against the Spiders, the Bonnies loss was self-inflicted.
They committed 25 turnovers – third-most this season – that led to a numbing 33 points for Richmond.
Barely halfway through the second quarter, Bona fell behind by 11 and would trail by no less than double figures the rest of the way … actually down by as many as 25 late in the fourth quarter.
The most damning stat, besides points off turnovers, was three-point shooting. Richmond was 10-of-27 beyond the arc, 37 percent, the Bonnies were barely half that, 3-of-16, 19 percent.
Former St. Bonaventure women’s basketball coach Jim Crowley, after 16 seasons as the head at SBU, took a step up in class, going to Providence College of the Big East two seasons ago.
Last season, he guided the Friars to a 12-18 record, 4-14 in the conference.
However, nine of those defeats were by seven-or-fewer points, one in overtime.
This season, in its own way, has been tougher.
Heading into tonight’s home game against Butler, Providence is struggling along at 9-17, 2-12, ninth in the 10-team Big East behind only Xavier (2-13), which has played one fewer game.
However, the Friars have lost nine games by 9-or-fewer points.
And, finally, there’s Miranda Drummond, who transferred to Syracuse when Crowley took the job at Providence.
All indications, are that she made the right choice.
Had she stayed, the Bonnies went 9-20 last season (4-12 in the Atlantic 10) and SBU’s struggles this year are well-documented.
Meanwhile, as a transfer, Drummond sat out last season’s 22-11 campaign at Syracuse that ended in an NCAA berth, with a win over Iowa State in the first round and a 30-point defeat by NCAA runner-up Connecticut in the second round.
This season, Drummond, a 6-foot-1, redshirt junior from Binghamton, has helped the Orange to an 18-7 record, though only 6-6 (ninth) in the 15-team Atlantic Coast Conference.
Syracuse opened the season 11-0 and has lost four games by 7-or-fewer points.
Meanwhile, she and the other four starters, have opened all 25 games. She’s second on the team in scoring (15 points per game), shooting 47 percent from the field and 38 on treys. Drummond is also averaging seven rebounds, tied for first on the team, and is second on the team in average minutes played (33).
The Orange have a postseason look.
