PHILADELPHIA — Three minutes into the second half, Jaylen Adams threw an alley-oop to the other half of the highest-scoring backcourt in the Atlantic 10, which Matt Mobley finished with a layup.
Three minutes later, Mobley returned the favor, finding Adams in transition for a 3-pointer that was splashed in front of the St. Bonaventure bench. And on and on it went. Adams and Mobley. Mobley and Adams. Like it has been for the last two years.
The Bonnies’ dynamic duo assisted on each other’s baskets five times in the second half and took turns making yet another opponent throw up its collective arms. In the end, they finished with a combined 56 points on 20-of-36 shooting, including nine 3-pointers to lead the Bonnies to a 79-68 victory.
It was their third-highest output of the season, behind the 60 they tallied in their league opener against UMass and the 59 they had against Duquesne, on the strength of Adams’ 40.
Nearing the end of the regular season, the rest of the league may be facing a harsh reality: Adams and Mobley might just now be at their best.
“We’re just confident,” Mobley said. “We’re always in the gym getting up extra shots. We know the defense is shifting towards us, so any open shot we get, we’ve got to knock it down. We’re playing well right now at a good time, but we’ve got to keep it rolling, keep it clicking.”
In the last five games – all Bona wins – the pair has accounted for two 40-point performances and two 30-point performances. In the only instance where both were held below 30, they still combined for 48.
In a battle Tuesday between tandems that were both averaging 38.2 points coming in — La Salle’s B.J. Johnson and Pookie Powell were also at that number — the Bonnies’ backcourt was on a much different level.
“You saw them make some really hard 3s, you also saw them get some easy ones,” Explorers coach John Giannini said. “We have a chance to beat them if they’re just making the tough ones, but not if they’re making the tough ones and getting the easy ones.”
What Giannini might not know after what we’ve seen against the likes of George Mason, Duquesne and Saint Louis is that even the difficult ones have seemingly become “easy” ones for Adams and Mobley.
Adams is averaging 28 points and over seven assists over his last five contests. Mobley is averaging 22 in that span. A combined 50 points per game in mid-February? In those instances, the Bonnies are unbeatable.
“An time we can get both clicking, it’s always going to be good for the team,” Adams said. “We know teams game plan to stop us from scoring, so when we can get going, I think it just makes everybody else’s job easier.
“If we can keep that up, I think we’re going to be tough to beat.”
With Tuesday’s win, Bona has captured seven-straight Atlantic 10 games for the first time in program history. It had previously tied the program mark, set in 1982-83. Earlier this year, it won eight-straight for the first time since 1970-71.
“They’ve done a really good job,” coach Mark Schmidt said. “We’ve had a lot of history here and a lot of really good teams. For this team to be able to do that is a testament to them and their abilities.
“But we’ve got to keep it going. We’re not at the top of the mountain, we’re still climbing. We’ve got five more games to go and the season’s far from over. We’ve got to stay hungry and keep working at it.”
LaDarien Griffin returned to the starting lineup after missing Saturday’s game against Richmond with a sprained right ankle. The junior forward showed little effect from the injury and made an impact, finishing with four points and seven rebounds in 30 minutes.
Bona snapped a three-game losing streak at La Salle, winning at Gola Arena for the first time since 2010. In terms of total years, that was its longest road drought against any A-10 team not named VCU (the Bonnies have played at the Siegel Center only twice since the Rams joined the league in 2012).
Their longest road drought now is against Richmond in the Robins Center, where they haven’t won since 2009.
Idris Taqqee moved into the top 10 in program history in games played (115) and is now 12 games off the all-time record held by Michael Davenport (from 2008-13). Adams, now with 1,767 points, moved within 31 points of Essie Hollis for sixth place in Bona history. Mobley is 207 points away from 2,000 for his collegiate career (including his two years at Central Connecticut State), and Bona is now one victory away from a third-straight 20-win season, which has happened just one other time in school history, from 1958-61.
