EDINBORO — Seniors John Eakin and Logan Caruso had good days for the Owls Indoor Track Team on Saturday.
Eakin placed second in the shot put with a throw of 52’ 2” while Caruso place fourth in the Mile with a season best time of 4:38.12. Logan also placed ninth in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:35.34.
“Both of these times should qualify him for the Tri-State Championship Meet next Saturday,” Owls coach Tom Tessena said. “John had previously qualified in the shot put. John is making progress with his form and we are hoping that we get that smoothed out so he can make some really big throws by the time indoor States rolls around in two weeks. Coach Dave Cercone has working hard with John and is optimistic about his chances.”
Eakin also ran the 60 meters in 7.60.
Caruso’s times in the Mile and 3000 set new senior school records breaking the marks set by Steven Kirkland in 2006 (Mile: 4:44.29 and 3000M: 9:35.75). Caruso also owns both the school records set in 2016 with times of 4:31.55 and 9:28.34 respectively.
“Coach Mark Kelley is also working hard to get in some quality workouts for Logan despite the tough weather conditions,” Tessena added.
Junior Matt Stafford had some good performances. He made the finals in the 60 High Hurdles and placed eighth (9.05). He also placed ninth in the 200M (23.49), just missing the junior record (23.48). He is also very close to the school record of 23.34 set by Cody Coats in 2011. “Matt also ran an impressive leg in the 4×200 where he came from behind by 30 yards to win the heat and put us into seventh place,” Tessena said. “Matt actually broke 23 (seconds) for his split.”
The other members of that relay were Jaron Ambrose, Billy Naglik, and Nate Blauser, finishing with a time of 1:38.39.
“They may have qualified for the Championship Meet and we have to wait until Monday to find out for sure,” Tessena said.”
Nate Blauser placed 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.68.
“Nate has a good chance of qualifying as well,” Tessena said.
Jaron Ambrose ran 9:34 in the 60 High hurdles for 10th place.
“We are pretty sure Jaron will qualify for this event.”
Naglik had his best time in the 400M (57.95). Steve Kellam placed 15th in the pole vault with a jump of 11’5”, just missing 12 feet. Ian Paterniti had a personal best of 8’.
Paterniti, Devin Benson, Ethan Hollamby, and Quentin Minard placed 13th in the 4×800 relay (9:45.16). Benson also ran the 800M in a personal best of 2:27.9 while Minard ran the Mile in 5:53.34. Kyle Stewart ran the 60M in 8.25 and the 400M in 64.27.
“Stafford has qualified for the 60M, 60m High hurdles, and the 200M,” Tessena said. “Ambrose has made it the 60 HH and Blauser looks like he is in the 800. Our 4×200 and maybe the 4×800 will get in and Steve Kellam has an outside shot as well in the Pole Vault.
“This would give us about 10-11 guys,” he added. “We are glad that these guys have worked hard this winter despite the weather and will be in better shape to compete in the outdoor season.”
