Through the month of February, the McKean County SPCA will be holding a Be Mine Feline event.
Cats three years old and over will be given away for free, and are spayed and neutered.
Although the cats are free, individuals wishing to adopt must be approved.
The event has been done a couple years in the past, but is now in a greater need because the SPCA is at full capacity with cats, having over 120.
The organization has been at this number for around 6 or 8 months.
The reasoning, according to Mary Jo Corignani, for choosing cats three years of age and older, was due to the fact that everyone wants a kitten.
“We want to give our older cats a chance,” said Corignani.
She feels as though it is important to spay and neuter cats due to the fact that the SPCA has begun to have to turn away cats because of full capacity. Many outdoor cats that are not spayed and neutered will have kittens, and the SPCA does not currently have the space to hold them.
The Be Mine Feline event hopefully will also help to solve this issue, freeing up much needed space.
Corignani believes that spaying and neutering cats, is, “what’s best for the cats.”
She hopes that this event will make it so the organization doesn’t have to keep turning away cats.
“We get calls every day about cats that are starving and freezing,” she stated. “We want to be able to give them all forever homes.”
The SPCA also will be holding an event this Sunday at the Tractor Supply company in Bradford.
The event will feature a bake sale, as well as a dog kissing booth.
