ONE TALL TALE: On Jan. 21, 1965, Henry Hite, who was known as “The World’s Tallest Man,” came to the Bradford area for a visit. He greeted shoppers at the Quality Market from 4 to 6 p.m.
“Touring this area on behalf on Wilson’s Certified Meats, the giant comes to Quality Market to welcome customers.”
Hite, who since coming to Bradford passed away in May of 1978, was 8 feet, 2 inches tall.
He also had to wear customized size 22 shoes, which were just a measly $250 per pair. Hite also had a 19-inch collar and 42-inch sleeve length.
“Henry Hite started a rapid growth at the age of 9 and by the time he reached 12 he was 7 feet tall. He grew 4 inches during one month,” The Era reported at the time.
A former resident of Chicago, Hite’s typical breakfast consisted of a pound of bacon, a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread and one pot of coffee.
When he arrived at the Quality Market, he was wearing a gilt-edged red velvet robe and had on a custom-made size 8½ jewelled gold crown. On the back of the robe, there was a Wilson’s certified seal in full color.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the tallest man currently living is Sultan Kösen from Ankara, Turkey, measuring 8 feet, 2.8 inches in February of 2011.
“The part-time farmer was the first man over 8 feet to be measured by Guinness World Records in over 20 years.”
Sultan first became the world’s tallest living man in 2009, when he measured 8 feet, 1 inch in height.
SARA SANTILLI: If we ran 100 miles in a month, we’d be patting ourselves on the back. Enthusiastically.
Kane Area High School alum Sara Santilli ran that far in 34 hours at the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team’s Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run.
That’s even faster than the 52 hours we incorrectly reported on Monday. Her father contacted us with the correct information. He explained that runners have to finish in under 36 hours just to be considered a finisher in the HURT100.
