SMETHPORT — From July to December, a total of 111.2 pounds of medication were deposited in drop boxes at police departments in Bradford, Bradford Township and Kane Borough and at the McKean County Sheriff’s Department.
“The medication drop boxes are a means to assist residents in properly disposing of unused medication so that children and other visitors do not have access to them,” officials said in a press release. “The goal is to reduce the rate of addiction and to keep drugs out of the water supply.”
Broken down, the Bradford City Police Department saw 55.2 pounds of medication deposited compared to 50.2 pounds last quarter; in Kane, 10.6 pounds as compared to 26.4 pounds the last quarter; at the McKean County Sheriff’s Department, 24 pounds as compared to 16 pounds last quarter; and at Bradford Township, 21.4 pounds compared to zero last quarter. From the quarter that ended in June, the total weight of the medication deposited into the boxes was 92.60 pounds, less than the most-recent quarter.
The medication deposited into the drop boxes is collected by a county detective with the district attorney’s office. The weight of the drugs collected is reported to the state, and the medication is destroyed.
