A Bradford man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol for an accident Aug. 17 that caused major damage at the Bradford YMCA.
Allen Clair Timblin, 43, of 54 S. Kendall Ave., Apt. 3, is facing charges including DUI, causing damage to property and leaving the scene and driving with a suspended license.
According to court records, at 7:45 p.m. Aug. 17, a minivan driven by Timblin was traveling on Boylston Street toward Kennedy Street when it crossed the left lane, went onto the sidewalk in front of the YMCA and crashed into the large electrical transformer in the yard of the facility. He left the scene without stopping, court records allege.
There was substantial damage to the YMCA and a complete disruption of electrical service to the facility, which was occupied at the time of the crash, the records alleged.
Timblin was later found at 43 Forman St. When asked about the crash, he said he was turning the corner and “all of a sudden it just locked up,” the records read. Timblin’s blood-alcohol content was .156 percent; the legal limit is .08 percent.
The 50,000-pound transformer stopped the van from crashing through the wall into the wellness center of the facility, according to YMCA officials. The main pump at the pool was destroyed during the incident, and preliminary estimates for the damages were more than $100,000, according to Brent Raabe, executive director of the YMCA, in the days after the crash.
No one was injured in the crash.
