CAKE: If you planning to attend the birthday celebration for Marilyn Horne Saturday at the Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center, cutting of the cake will begin at noon.
Thursday’s column stated cake would be cut until noon.
We think it’s a good rule of thumb that cake, like your first cocktail of day, shouldn’t be served until the morning is over.
Cake will be served until it’s gone.
Marilyn turns 84 on Tuesday.
1 OF 6: Clayton Vecellio of Lewis Run passed along the story of another person who has a January birthday: an American World War II veteran who died more than 60 years ago.
“Ira Hamilton Hayes was born on Pima Indian Reservation in Arizona on Jan. 12, 1923. He was 1 of 6 American service men to raise the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima’s Mount Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945, during World War II.
“This event was immortalized by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal’s famous photo and later by a Marine War Memorial Monument in Arlington, Va.
“Hayes returned home after World War II a celebrated hero but was unable to cope with fame.
“He was found dead in a ditch on a lonely road on Sacaton Indian Reservation in Arizona on Jan. 24, 1955.
“His death was due to ‘exposure to freezing weather and overconsumption of alcohol.’ He was 33 years old.
“He and all our military personal are heroes.”
Clayton took this photo of the memorial on May 6, 2017, during an Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C.
“This photo is deceiving because these men are about 15 feet tall,” Clayton says. “This is huge. God bless America.”
