PORT ALLEGANY –– No one was injured in a minor furnace leak at Ardagh Group’s glass manufacturing facility in Port Allegany Tuesday night, prompting a multiple fire department response.
Just after 10 p.m., the McKean County 911 dispatched the Star Hose Co. No. 1 for a fire at Ardagh Glass at 1 Glass Place. The caller reported that one of the molten glass tanks at the factory failed, which resulted in a major leak and fire, the company’s Facebook post stated.
“Units from Station 3 arrived and met plant employees who directed them to the 3rd floor of the plant where the fire was knocked down and several hand lines were stretched to cool the molten glass while plant employees worked to patch the hole in the tank,” the fire department stated on Facebook.
As a precaution, emergency personnel were called to the facility, said Gina Behrman, director of marketing and communications at Ardagh Group. The incident did not impact production, she said.
The fire was under control at 10:42 p.m. Tuesday.
Also on scene were fire departments from Roulette, Smethport and Coudersport and Weston Mills, N.Y.
