CALENDARS: The annual Era calendars are older than we realized.
Many will recognize the format, here, even if they haven’t seen the 2018 edition yet. This one is Cherry Springs State Park by Era photographer Wade Aiken.
Sally Costik, curator of the Bradford Landmark Society, has calendars going as far back as 1931.
In fact, the society has calendars for 1931, 1944, 1946, 1950, 1959-91, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2002-14 and 2016-18.
“We aren’t sure if these are the first or if we just don’t have those missing year,” she said.
If anyone has one of the missing years, Sally would love someone to drop it off at the Landmark Society’s Herbig Bakery location on East Corydon Street.
Sally, we’re willing to bet we have a 2015 calendar floating around the newsroom, and maybe some of the other years. We will look.
Over the years, the calendar has been a way to showcase photos of local interest by area photographers.
Sally noted, “Photographers included Don Tanner, Will Champlin, Bill Linstrom, Glenn Melvin, Pete Braun, Craig Melvin, Art Frownfelter, Alan Hancock, Francie Long, PennDot and UPB.”
The first two years the Landmark Society has were sketches: 1931 of a boy fishing and 1944 of two dogs. The 1946 calendar was an architectural rendering of the proposed Bradford Hospital.
For the most part after that it was photographs of local sites.
There isn’t anyone in the building who can remember more about the calendar’s beginnings, but we’ll keep digging.
In the meantime, we’d love to hear any information readers might have about them. For instance, can anyone tell us if 1931 was the first one?
