COUDERSPORT — Lady Falcons head coach Brian Green knew it was going to be a learning curve for both he and his team to begin the year in his first season back at the helm.
After dropping its first two contests of the year, Coudersport dominated Galeton 73-35 on Friday night and won their third consecutive game.
Coudy’s offense was electric from the tip, as the Falcons poured in 29 first-quarter points, while holding the Lady Tigers to just six of their own.
Haley Keck again led Coudersport in scoring — finishing with with 18 points — but it was a balanced scoring attack for the offense. The Falcons had 11 girls with at least two points in the game, and their depth was once again on full display against a Galeton side who didn’t register a single point from any of their bench players.
“We are trying to develop depth in case you get an injury or somebody gets in foul trouble,” Green said. “The girls are all working hard and that’s evident by how much we are getting a lot of extra girls in the scoring column. My goal is to have them all score in the game. So I’m pleased with that.”
While Keck made most of her marks from the perimeter, Galeton also had no answers for Coudersport’s frontcourt in the paint. EmmaRae Easton had a double-double, with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sarah Chambers grabbed nine boards to go along with her seven points.
The Falcons’ unselfish play, combined with a suffocating defense, left no room for a Galeton comeback in the second half.
For Green, the chemistry between his team is beginning to grow, and the results have been painful for the opposition. Coudersport has won its last three games by an average of 33 points.
“Just learning what I want them to do and me learning what they can do,” Green said. “We modified our defense tonight to something we haven’t done all year and it worked extremely well in the first half. We are also just shooting the ball better overall.”
The Falcons kept clicking into the second half, and despite turning the ball over themselves, Coudersport continued to play strong defense on Galeton.
Although the game got away from Galeton (2-3) early on, one of their individual players achieved a huge personal milestone.
With 4:53 remaining in the game, senior Makaya Shadle hit a contested layup to reach 1,000 points for her high school career. The game was immediately stopped and Shadle was treated to a standing ovation from the crowd and the Coudersport bench.
Even though her team lost by 38, Shadle put together a nice evening, leading her team with 14 points and playing aggressively right up the final whistle.
Shadle becomes the fourth girl in school history to reach that achievement, and her head coach that has seen every one of those couldn’t be happier.
“She can play all phases of the game up and down,” Tigers head coach Andrew Macensky said. “She plays offense, defense, fast break and press. She’s just a true hustler the entire game. Tonight they had her discombobulated a little bit and she was nerved up. She’s an all-around hustler. She works at her game, and she deserves it.”
Makaya joins her sister — Latascia — as the last two Lady TIgers to reach that mark. Macensky hopes that it is something that the entire girls basketball program at Galeton can build off of in the future.
“It’s pretty impressive,” Macensky said. “Galeton girls basketball hasn’t really been too great over the years. Since I took over 12 years ago, we’ve luckily had the two Shadle girls and they put the time in when they were younger to get to this point. It is well-deserved, and I can’t say enough. She’s a heck of a player.”
