The annual Winter Trek event at the Marilla Reservoir, usually held in February, has been moved up a month earlier next year to allow for more volunteers to pitch in, as well as provide a better chance for snow.
Spokesman Steve Kresge said this winter’s event, sponsored by the Tuna Valley Trail Association (TVTA) will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 21 at the reservoir off of Route 346, west of Bradford. The event is open to everyone who enjoys getting out on a beautiful winter afternoon in the forest.
“The Winter Trek is just a community get-together event sponsored by the TVTA,” Kresge explained. “It is very informal and folks can just come and go as they please.”
He said that while the event is free of charge, donations would be appreciated as everything raised helps the trail association maintain the trails.
“Everyone is invited to come out to hike, snowshoe or cross-country ski the trails in the Marilla Reservoir area and meet others with similar interests,” Kresge continued. “It’s a good time to get out and enjoy the outdoors and the wonderful area we live in.”
He said those who don’t own outdoor equipment will have access to use a limited number of snowshoes and skis that will be available.
“Hot cider and hot dogs will be provided at the gazebo,” Kresge added.
Organizers of the event said there will be other amenities for participants including a shuttle to the top of Marilla Springs.
A bonfire will also be at the site for participants who want to warm themselves while visiting with others.
