HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Bradford girls basketball team dropped a 62-32 decision to Hollidaysburg in its season-opening contest on Friday night.
The Lady Owls ran up against a well-balanced Hollidaysburg team that saw nine different players dent the score sheet. Leading the way were Theresa Gildea (15 points), McKenna Hurd (10), and Maura Gildea (10).
Hannah Lary led Bradford with a team-high 12 points, while Emily Warner added five.
“We started off slow, and we expected some jitters with our young players,” BHS coach Bob Hannon said. “We got a little nervous and rushed some shots. We had some open looks but we didn’t take advantage.
“We played much better in the second half. We made some back door cuts that gave us some good opportunities.
Bradford fell victim to a great three-point shooting display by Hollidaysburg, who hit nine treys in the contest.
“It’s a tough way to start the season, but it was some good competition for us,” Hannon said.
Bradford will wrap up the tournament against Central Martinsburg at 1 p.m. today.
NTL roundup: Coudy’s Keck hits 1,000 points
COUDERSPORT — Coudersport’s Haley Keck reached the 1,000 point plateau and the Lady Falcons opened the basketball season with a 55-32 victory over St. Marys in the first round of the Coudersport Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.
Keck needed 18 points coming into the game and finished with 18.
“Haley made a free throw in the fourth quarter with just under five minutes to play to reach 1,000 points,” said Coudy coach Brian Green. Keck was 2-for-3 from the freethrow line to go with her six field goals.
Backing her offensively was EmmaRae Easton with a double-double. She scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Shaelyn Black came up with six steals for the winners.
“It was a nice win to start the season,” Green noted. “I was happy with our defense in the first half, but we got a little sloppy in the second half.”
The Lady Falcons advance to the title game today (7:15 p.m.) against Kane, which defeated Johnsonburg 50-39 in the other first round contest.
“We have to clean up some things before our game with Kane,” Green emphasized. “It will be a matchup of last year’s Double A district final.”
High scorer for St. Marys was Bekka Bauer with 11 points. The Lady Dutch will play Johnsonburg in today’s consolation game.
Eisenhower 34, Port Allegany 29
SHEFFIELD — Port Allegany’s Cailey Barnett scored a team-high 10 points, but they weren’t enough to prevent the Lady Gators from dropping their season-opening basketball game to Eisenhower on Friday.
Port led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter and was still up by one point (16-15) at halftime. The Lady Knights took the lead in the third period and held on for the win.
High scorer for Eisenhower was Lydia Gianinni with 10 points.
Port Allegany returns to action today against Youngsville.
Oswayo Valley 60, Walsh 28
SHINGLEHOUSE — Shayla Bickel’s team-high 21 points paced a balanced scoring attack that powered Oswayo Valley to victory over Archbishop Walsh in the Lady Green Wave’s season-opening basketball game on Friday.
Joining Bickel were McKenzie Gross with 12 points and Karina West with 10. A total of eight OV players put points on the board for the winners.
“We had some first-half jitters, but really pulled away in the third quarter,” said Kelly Rice, OV coach. “We had balanced scoring and our foul shooting was tough. It was a really good home opener.”
Game scoring honors went to Walsh’s Grace Greer with 22 points.
“Greer played a strong game for Walsh,” Rice noted.
Oswayo (1-0) returns to action on Monday hosting Friendship.
Portville (N.Y.) 55, Smethport 26
SMETHPORT — A game-high 18 points from Abbey Woodard wasn’t enough for the Lady Hubbers as they dropped their season-opening contest to Portville.
The Lady Panthers got double digit scoring performances from Karly Welty (16 points), Sydney Colligan (11), and Bryn Milne (10) in Friday night’s cross-state contest.
“Portville’s a very good team,” Smethport coach Eric Lutz said. “I’ve watched these girls the last four years. Coach Welty’s done a nice job. You can tell that they’ve played a lot of basketball together.
“I wasn’t disappointed with our effort. We’re going to have some growing pains this year, but it’s all about how these younger girls catch up to the speed of the varsity game.”
Portville improves to 3-0 with the victory. The Panthers also won the JV contest.
Smethport will travel to face Ridgway on Monday.
Ridgway 57, Cameron County 31
EMPORIUM — The Lady Elkers cruised to a big season-opening win on Friday thanks to a 25-point performance from Emily Fullem.
Ridgway was able to race out to a 19-5 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Alyvia McKimm led Cameron County with 12 points, while Kaelee Bresslin finished with 10 points and three steals. Hayley Hilfiger added 10 rebounds.
The Lady Red Raiders will be off until Wednesday when they host Brockway.
