ALLEGANY, N.Y. — Smethport’s Caleb Lutz had what might be considered a career night Friday in the first round of the Allegany-Limestone Tip-Off Tournament.
Lutz scored a game-high 22 points, pulled down seven rebounds, had seven assists and recorded five steals to lead the hubbers to a 62-39 victory over Southwestern.
“Caleb played really well,” said Smethport coach Jay Acker. “As a team we shot 64 percent from the field. We also played real good defense. We put a lot of pressure on them and created a lot of turnovers.
“I was happy to get that first win of the season under our belt. It was a good team effort straight across the board,” he added.
Also in double figures for the Hubbers was Conner Alfieri with 14 points.
Smethport led 10-9 after the first quarter, but outscored Southwestern 22-6 in the second period to take control of the game.
Leading Southwestern was Alex Card with 13 points.
Smethport will take on host Allegany-Limestone in the tournament title game starting at 7:30 p.m. today.
Oswayo Valley 69, Bucktail 62
WESTFIELD — Oswayo Valley’s Theo Henry and Gavin Babcock combined for 41 points, but the Green Wave had to survive a flurry of three-point field goals to defeat Bucktail 69-62 in the first round of the Cowanesque Valley Tip-Off Tournament on Friday.
Henry led OV with 22 points while Babcock added 19.
The Green Wave led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter and 31-25 at halftime as Bucktail’s shooting from outside the arc began closing the score. The visitors finished with 10 three-point goals.
“We struggled to defend their outside shooting,” said OV coach Clark Cummings. “Offensively we did nice things, but we are not where we need to be defensively and rebounding. We’re going to have to be better tomorrow against Cowanesque Valley.”
Cow Valley defeated Northern Potter 63-18 to reach today’s title game against Oswayo Valley. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
Game scoring honors went to Bucktail’s Liam Dwyer with 24 points, while teammate Tony Pentz checked in with 11.
Cowanesque Valley 63, Northern Potter 18
WESTFIELD — The hosts of the Cowanesque Valley Tournament rolled to a big win over the Panthers in the season-opening game for both schools on Friday.
Skylar Vinluan led the way with a game-high 21 points, while Christian Kemp (14) and Tyler Vargeson (13) also finished in double figures.
Holden Cowburn led the Panthers with five points.
Northern Potter will face Bucktail today to close out the tournament.
Port Allegany 51, Sheffield 50
SHEFFIELD — Howie Stuckey poured in a game-high 27 points and Port Allegany held on to defeat host Sheffield in the first round of the Sheffield Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.
“Basically we just outlasted them,” said Gators coach Jeff Stuckey. “We had spurts where we would be up by 8-10 points and then they went to a man-to-man, we had a few turnovers and they got back into the game.
‘It wasn’t pretty, but we held on for the win and we’ll take it,” he added.
Port Allegany will take on North Clarion today in the title game starting at 7:30 p.m.
“Clarion beat Jamestown (PA) tonight and was the team that knocked us out of the district playoffs last season. They have nearly everyone back and are tough,” Stuckey noted.
High scorer for Sheffield was Cale Albaugh with 16 points, while Matt Dunham added 14 and Luke Davidson 10.
