By the end of the year, shoppers will likely have another place to stop for groceries.
Work on ALDI, to be located adjacent to Taco Bell facing East Main Street in Foster Township, is progressing at the Bradford Mall.
The parking lot has been paved, brick has been laid and some of the signage has been installed. And work is continuing on the inside and outside of the store that will have about 12,000 square feet of selling space with five aisles.
“We are still on track with construction to open our new store in the Bradford Mall before the end of the year,” said J.R. Perry, ALDI Saxonburg division vice president.
Information on the grand opening hasn’t been released yet.
The closest ALDI to Bradford is located in Olean, N.Y.
Even with the addition of ALDI, not everything is going well at the Bradford Mall.
Vagabond’s End Games & Hobbies, located inside the mall, is expected to shut its doors Dec. 22. The store opened inside the former Tina’s Hallmark store during the summer of 2016.
“We were at the point that we could either take out a loan and stem the bleeding (lack of walk-in customers) or get out with no debt,” said store co-owner Nicholas Brooks. “We went with the second. The biggest problem was that no one (out of town) knew we were there, as there is no indication of where the mall is or its main entrance.”
That meant the store lost many customers, he said.
The gaming and hobby store is the only business in the back side of the mall. That part of the mall last saw occupied storefronts in the early 2000s. The only other business inside the mall is PHOENIX Rehabilitation and Health Services Inc., located just inside the mall’s main entrance.
In addition to Vagabond’s End Games & Hobbies, the mall area has Sheetz, Taco Bell, Tractor Supply, Dollar Tree, PHOENIX Rehabilitation and Health Services Inc., The Cellular Connection, Label Shopper, Peebles, Big Lots, CNB Bank, Dunham’s Sports, Big Lots and warehouse/storage for Balkan Beverage Co.
