PORT ALLEGANY — Property taxes are expected to go up in Port Allegany next year –– but not as much as originally planned.
After reviewing the budget at a meeting Monday, Port Allegany Borough Council whittled down a 0.98 millage increase to roughly 0.4 mills. Officials decided to cut spending for a project and decrease spending on another to lower the millage rate.
In the end, borough approved to advertise the proposed spending plan.
Also at the meeting, officials discussed the need for part-time police officers. As two of the officers have received employment elsewhere, the remaining employees “will be stretched thin in the coming months,” Chief Dave Distrola said.
The meeting also involved bidding farewell to councilwoman Judy Taylor.
“It has been a pleasure to work with all of you over the years; however, after 13 years, I think it’s time I did something else,” she said. “This is my last meeting, and I just wanted to thank you. It’s been fun and if I have any problems you can be sure that I’ll be in those (public seats) with them.”
Council will hold its next meeting Dec. 18, starting at 6:30 p.m., to review and approve the borough’s budgets.
