Early Tuesday morning, a Johnsonburg police officer shot a man who was wanted on a warrant, injuring him.
Pennsylvania State Police from Troop C, who are investigating the incident, have not released the identities of the officer or the injured person, except to say they were a veteran officer and a 30-year-old man.
According to state police, shortly after midnight on Tuesday, a uniformed Johnsonburg police officer confronted the man along the 100-block of West Center Street, Johnsonburg, because he there was a warrant out for his arrest. The man allegedly resisted being taken into custody, fighting off the officer for several minutes.
“The officer was unable to gain control of suspect and the fight escalated to a level where the officer fired one round from his sidearm, striking the subject,” a prepared statement from state police read.
Police officers from Ridgway Borough, St. Marys City and the Ridgway state police barracks then arrived on scene to provide backup. They detained the man and provided medical care until emergency medical services were available.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to the torso, according to police, who said he was treated locally, then transferred to a trauma hospital. He is in stable condition.
Meanwhile, the officer was placed on administrative leave — as per the policy of the Johnsonburg Borough Police Department — pending the investigation into the use of force, state police indicated.
State police said the Elk County district attorney will review the troopers’ investigation to determine whether the use of force was justified.
No danger exists to the public, police stated.
Police did not indicate what the arrest warrant was for.
An attempt to reach District Attorney Shawn McMahon for comment was unsuccessful.
